Republicans must recapture the Large cities

Among the ironies of the past four years, says Jonah Goldberg, is that Donald Trump, the ultimate city slicker, hitched his presidency to the belief that the”real America” isn’t found in its cities, but at the so-called ?yover nations. According to the”Republican mythology”, metropolitan centres like New York, Los Angeles and Chicago are home to the hated”elites” — and could be abandoned to the Democrats. It is a foolish approach: urban areas not only contain the majority of the population, they are also admired cultural centres and drivers of the type of economic dynamism that conservatives normally celebrate. The towns will certainly bene?t from a political rivalry: Democrat leaders like to moan about the state of this country, but it’s in Democrat-run cities that”police abuses are most prevalent”, and colleges are in the stranglehold of over-mighty unions. And there is no reason why Republicans should not make headway in urban areas: if properly directed, messages regarding red tape and overregulation would surely ?nd an audience at the thousands of”small store and restaurant owners, plumbers, contractors, et al.” that make the cities they are. The”real” America that chosen Trump is diminishing. “If the GOP does not broaden its horizons, the celebration will vanish with it.”
