Hunter Biden: Real scandal or Russian dirty trick?
Here it is, right on cue–your”October surprise,” said Jonathan Chait in NYMag.com. In a lastditch attempt to save President Trump’s campaign, the Rupert Murdoch–owned New York Post last week published a few”bombshell” reports based on emails, photographs, and videos supposedly retrieved from a notebook which once belonged to Joe Biden’s son Hunter. The materials seemingly depict the younger Biden smoking crack, with sex, and trading on his father’s name to get a $50,000-a-month job on the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian energy firm, when his dad was heading upward U.S. coverage in Ukraine. The Post claimed it had a”smoking gun” email from a Burisma executive, thanking Hunter for introducing him to the then vice president. However, the Biden effort has denied that the meeting ever took place, and 50 former intelligence officials this week signed a letter stating the allegedly abandoned Hunter Biden laptop reeks of a”Russian data operation” like the hacked-and-leaked Democratic emails in 2016. As it happens, the Post got the materials from Trump’s clownish attorney, Rudy Giuliani, that has been openly soliciting Biden dirt from unethical, pro-Kremlin characters in Ukraine for a couple of decades, including Andrii Derkach, whom Trump’s own Treasury Department has labeled an”active Russian representative .” If the mails are Russian forgeries, stated Michael Goodwin from the New York Post, then Joe Biden must say so. Instead, the offender is denying all comment, beyond ignoring the story as”a smear campaign” Do not voters”deserve the entire truth” about the Biden family’s”dirty deals” in Ukraine? Another notebook email, from 2017, discusses a profitable Chinese company partnership, with 10% of equity going to”the big guy,” presumably Joe Biden himself. The mainstream media is still trying hard to bury this”explosive” narrative, said
Rich Lowry in NationalReview.com. Desperate to shield Biden, major news outlets only declared the story”debunked, without doing some other work to debunk it.”
There’s no scandal here,” said David Ignatius in The Washington Post. Both Bidens have acknowledged the impropriety of Hunter functioning for Burisma, which obviously hired him expecting to affect U.S. policy. But two independent GOP-led Senate committees last month failed to find any wrongdoing by Biden Sr., who really pushed Ukraine to crack down on corrupt companies like Burisma. Intelligence officials say it is common practice for hackers to mix in forged files with real ones, and forensic specialists have flagged typographical”anomalies” in some mails”that indicate fakery.” It is so distressed, stated Molly Jong-Fast in TheDailyBeast.com.
The Post even stooped so low as to gloatingly publish texts from which Hunter berates himself for his drug dependency, and Joe calls him”my lovely son” and advises him”Only focus is recovery.
With another”manufactured” email scandal, Trump is expecting to create this election”a close sequel to 2016,” said Jeet Heer in TheNation.com. But this time the”mudslinging” is”not sticking.” The media is viewing these dubious mails with proper skepticism; in fact, the veteran reporter that typed up this”pseudo scandal” for the New York Post was so suspicious about its provenance he refused to attach his byline. Sorry, Mr. President, that isn’t Hillary’s emails 2.0. History does not always repeat.
