An appalling Attack at the airport
Something happened at Qatar’s Doha airport earlier this month that will taint the country’s image for years to come, ” says Ben Graham: airport of?cials hauled 18 women off a ?ight jump for Sydney — 13 of these Australians — and subjected most of these to invasive genital examinations. Passengers on nine other ?ights that day were also searched. The hunt, precipitated by the discovery of a newborn infant found abandoned in a garbage bin, was aimed at identifying and prosecuting the infant’s mother.
Australia’s prime minister, Scott Morrison, has condemned it as”dreadful”; human rights groups have stated such non-consensual examinations could probably be classed as sexual assault. Qatar at ?rst tried to defend the hunts, stating of?cials were just trying to identify the woman responsible for a”shocking attempt to kill” a baby; only afterwards did it state”regrets” for such behaviour. However, the episode is completely in keeping with a state where women can be imprisoned only for having sex outside marriage, even when they have reported being raped. You can only hope this horri?c episode will probably be a wake-up call to get a country which treats its girls for example”second-class citizens”.
